Men are the new plastic surgery addicts as number having 'manbag' surgery on eyes soars 100 pc
Surgeons at Transform believe the boom in eye-lift operations has its roots in the current troubled financial climate - with businessmen believing a smart, youthful appearance will help them hold on to their current job - or get a new one if necessary.
Cosmetic surgeon Dr Lorraine Ishak said: 'Job losses have already begun and more men are realising that they need to smarten up and look alert to stand out from the crowd. Patients can have either just their upper or lower lids lifted or have both done at the same time. During the operation, which can take as little as an hour, fine cuts are made into the lines and creases on or near the eyelids and the wrinkles at the corner of the eyes'.
Figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons show that 224 paid to have their man boobs or 'moobs' removed last year a 27 per cent rise on 2006.
In total, almost 33,000 operations were carried out by members of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons last year. As one in three plastic surgeons is a member of the organisation, the true toll is likely to be over 100,000. Women accounted for more than nine in ten of the operations, with breast enlargement, the most popular op, followed by eyelid surgery, face or neck lifts, liposuction and breast reduction.
